Ptilineurus (lat. Ptilineurus) belongs to the family Anobiidae of the order Coleoptera. These insects are specialized pests that are most often found in forest ecosystems, but under certain conditions, they can damage timber and perennial plantings. Their systematic position indicates a close connection with the processes of wood decomposition.
The diet of this pest includes various species of deciduous and coniferous trees. The insect poses a particular danger to weakened specimens in orchards and forest nurseries. By damaging plant tissues, Ptilineurus facilitates the penetration of secondary infections, such as fungal diseases, which significantly reduces the vitality of the crop.
The biology of the pest is characterized by a complex life cycle, including the stages of egg, larva, pupa, and imago. Adult beetles lead a secretive lifestyle, and the main damage is caused by the larvae. They create tunnels inside plant tissues, feeding on xylem and phloem, which disrupts normal sap flow and leads to gradual drying of the plant.
The nature of the damage is determined by the presence of holes on the surface of the bark and wood, from which "frass" (boring dust) pours out. The harmful effect manifests itself in premature leaf fall, shoot deformation, and general growth inhibition of the tree. In case of mass reproduction, populations are capable of killing young seedlings within a few seasons.
