Description

The genus Ptilinus belongs to the Anobiidae family within the order Coleoptera. These insects are typical xylophages whose lifecycle is closely linked to the infestation of woody tissues. One of the most prominent species is Ptilinus pectinicornis, commonly found in both natural forest ecosystems and man-made structures.

This pest primarily attacks hardwood species such as beech, alder, birch, oak, ash, and linden. Ptilinus causes significant damage not only to stressed living trees in orchards and parks but also to seasoned timber, construction materials, furniture, and antique wooden items, making it a serious threat to the woodworking industry.

The lifecycle begins with the female laying eggs into cracks in the bark or existing holes in the wood. The larvae, characterized by white bodies and well-developed heads, bore intricate galleries within the wood structure. Pupation occurs in specialized chambers located near the wood surface after the larvae complete their feeding stage.

Damage is characterized by circular exit holes, approximately 1.5–2 mm in diameter. Inside, the wood is reduced to fine frass because larval galleries often intersect, compromising the structural integrity of the material. In severe cases of infestation, the wood loses its load-bearing capacity, and accumulations of fine sawdust, known as boring dust, appear on the surface.

  • Prevention: timely sanitary felling of infested trees.
  • Trunk maintenance: removal of dead bark where adult beetles hibernate.
  • Chemical control: application of systemic and contact insecticides.
  • Heat treatment: heating timber to destroy larvae at all developmental stages.
  • Moisture management: maintaining dry conditions slows down beetle reproduction.
