Comb-horned furniture beetle

The comb-horned furniture beetle (Ptilinus pectinicornis) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Anobiidae. This insect is a significant technical pest known for attacking various types of wood. Adult beetles have a cylindrical body shape, ranging from 3 to 5 mm in length, and are dark brown or black in color. Males are easily distinguished by their comb-like antennae, which give the species its common name.

This species primarily infests hardwoods such as beech, birch, alder, maple, and lime, although it can occasionally be found in softwoods. While they occur in nature on weakened or dying trees, they frequently invade warehouses, lumber yards, and residential buildings. Once inside, they target furniture, structural beams, and other wooden fixtures, often leading to severe structural compromise.

The biology and lifecycle of the beetle are heavily dependent on wood moisture content. Females lay their eggs in cracks or existing openings in the wood. Upon hatching, the larvae bore deep into the timber, creating intricate galleries and filling them with fine wood dust known as frass. The developmental cycle typically lasts one year, though it can extend significantly under unfavorable conditions, making early detection difficult.

The damage is caused primarily by the larvae, which can hollow out wood from within, leaving only a thin outer layer intact. The presence of these beetles is often identified by small, round exit holes on the surface of the wood, accompanied by piles of powdery frass that fall from the galleries as the larvae move and feed.
