Description

The sunflower gelechiid moth (Ptocheuusa paupella) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Gelechiidae. This insect is recognized as a specific agricultural pest that primarily targets cultivated sunflower crops, causing economic losses in production regions.

The larvae are the primary damaging stage. They feed internally within the sunflower heads, specifically targeting the developing achenes. This feeding behavior leads to significant yield reduction and decreases the overall oil quality of the harvested sunflower seeds.

The biological cycle consists of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult moth. The lifecycle is tightly synchronized with the host plant's phenology. Adults are nocturnal, making them difficult to monitor during the daylight hours, while the protected larval stage inside the head makes direct contact control challenging.
