This pest primarily attacks plants in the Asteraceae and Fabaceae families, including goldenrods and various asters. While they are not considered primary agricultural pests for major industrial crops, they can cause significant localized damage to ornamental plants, herbs, and legumes. Their presence is often detected by the specific clustering behavior of the nymphs on stems and leaves.

The life cycle of Publilia reticulata involves simple metamorphosis, consisting of egg, nymph, and adult stages. Nymphs typically aggregate in groups, and their survival is often significantly enhanced by the presence of ants. The ants tend to the treehoppers to collect the honeydew they excrete, and in return, they defend the nymphs against predators and parasites.

Feeding damage occurs when both nymphs and adults pierce plant tissues to suck the sap. This consistent fluid removal leads to stunted growth, leaf curling, and overall loss of plant vigor. Furthermore, the excretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which creates a dark film on the leaves, blocking sunlight and reducing the efficiency of photosynthesis.

Control strategies for this pest include physical and chemical measures. Removing host weeds from the field borders is the first line of defense to reduce the population. If infestation becomes severe, applications of contact or systemic insecticides are recommended.
