Description

Punctodera achalensis is a species of cyst-forming nematode belonging to the family Heteroderidae. These plant-parasitic organisms are known for their ability to persist in the soil for extended periods, making them difficult pests to eradicate once established in agricultural fields.

The primary hosts of this nematode are crops within the Solanaceae family, with potatoes being particularly susceptible. The nematode targets the root system, where it establishes its feeding site, eventually causing physiological stress to the entire plant structure.

The life cycle involves the formation of a cyst, which is the hardened cuticle of the dead female, acting as a protective container for hundreds of eggs. Larvae hatch in response to chemical signals released by the roots of host plants, enabling the pest to synchronize its life cycle with the growing season of the crop.

Damage caused by Punctodera achalensis is often insidious, as it disrupts the uptake of water and nutrients, resulting in stunting, yellowing of leaves, and significant yield reduction. In fields with high population densities, the economic damage can be substantial, leading to total crop failure in extreme cases.
