Punctodera chalcoensis is a specialized plant-parasitic nematode belonging to the order Tylenchida and the family Heteroderidae. As a significant agricultural pest, it primarily affects corn (maize) crops. Because of its persistence in the soil and potential for significant yield loss, it is closely monitored in international plant protection programs.

The primary host for this pathogen is corn. When the nematode infects the root system, it creates feeding sites that disrupt the plant's ability to uptake water and essential nutrients. Field observations often show stunted, chlorotic plants that fail to develop properly, directly impacting the photosynthetic capacity and overall vigor of the crop.

The biology of Punctodera chalcoensis is characterized by the production of resilient cysts. After mating, the body of the female hardens into a protective casing that contains numerous eggs. These cysts can remain dormant in the soil for extended periods, protected from environmental extremes and waiting for the chemical cues from the root exudates of a susceptible host plant.

The economic impact of this nematode is severe, primarily manifesting as significant yield reductions. By compromising the root system, the nematode leaves the corn vulnerable to secondary infections and abiotic stressors. In heavily infested soils, the cumulative damage can make commercial corn production economically unviable without intensive management intervention.
