Description
Punctodera stonei is a specialized cyst-forming nematode belonging to the family Heteroderidae. It is recognized as a significant soil-borne pest that primarily infects the root systems of specific agricultural crops, causing hidden but extensive damage to root architecture.
The host range of Punctodera stonei mainly includes plants within the Solanaceae family, with potatoes being a primary target. The nematode survives in the soil as a tough, protective cyst that can remain viable for several years, effectively waiting for the return of a susceptible host crop to initiate its infection cycle.
The lifecycle begins when dormant larvae hatch from the cyst in response to root exudates from host plants. The second-stage juveniles invade the roots, establishing a feeding site known as a syncytium. As the female matures, her body swells and eventually ruptures the root epidermis, becoming a hardened cyst that houses the next generation of eggs.
Visible symptoms on infected plants include stunted growth, chlorosis, and wilting during periods of stress. Because the nematode disrupts the root's ability to uptake water and nutrients, the overall plant vigor is drastically reduced. In high-density infestations, crop failure or severe yield losses occur, significantly impacting the commercial output of potato fields.
