Moss chrysalis snail

The Moss chrysalis snail (Pupilla muscorum) is a small terrestrial gastropod mollusk belonging to the order Stylommatophora and the family Pupillidae. Known for its distinct, minute, barrel-shaped shell, this organism is a common inhabitant of temperate ecosystems but can become a significant pest when it colonizes greenhouses, nurseries, or garden beds in large numbers.

This snail primarily affects young seedlings, ornamental plants, and various vegetable crops. It thrives in humid, shaded environments where it can feed on tender leaves and succulent tissues. Because of its tiny size, it is often overlooked by gardeners until significant damage to the plant population has already occurred, particularly in moist horticultural settings.

The biology of Pupilla muscorum is characterized by high adaptability to soil moisture and organic decomposition levels. They reproduce by laying eggs in damp soil or decaying vegetation. Their life cycle is relatively fast under optimal conditions, allowing for multiple overlapping generations that can persist throughout the growing season if environmental conditions remain favorable.

Damage caused by these snails is manifested by irregular holes in leaf margins and surfaces. While individual snails consume small amounts of plant tissue, collective feeding behavior can lead to stunted growth, loss of foliage in young plants, and increased susceptibility to secondary pathogenic infections such as bacterial spots or fungal rots entering through the lesions.

To manage and control infestations, a multi-faceted approach is recommended.

• Sanitation is critical; remove leaf litter, debris, and excessive mulch where snails congregate.
• Optimize irrigation practices to avoid constant waterlogging of the soil surface.
• Encourage natural predators such as ground beetles or predatory snails if possible.
• Apply iron phosphate-based baits, which are effective in reducing snail populations while being relatively safe for pets and wildlife.
