Pygmephorid mite

The Pygmephorid mite (genus Pygmephorus) belongs to the family Pygmephoridae within the order Trombidiformes. These microscopic organisms are well-known pests in commercial mushroom cultivation, particularly affecting the common button mushroom (Agaricus bisporus).

The mite primarily feeds on the mycelium of mushrooms. By consuming the hyphae, the pests cause significant structural damage to the substrate, which prevents the formation of healthy fruit bodies. In severe infestations, the entire mycelial mat can be destroyed, rendering the substrate unproductive.

The biology of Pygmephorus is characterized by a rapid lifecycle, which allows populations to explode under high humidity and warm temperatures typical of mushroom growing houses. They are opportunistic breeders and often rely on phoresy, attaching themselves to sciarid or phorid flies to distribute themselves throughout the growing facility.

Damage caused by these mites is usually identified by the appearance of dense, reddish-brown dust-like patches on the casing layer of the beds. Beyond direct consumption of the mushroom tissue, these mites are known vectors for various fungal pathogens, which can exacerbate crop loss through secondary infections.

Management strategies focus on rigorous hygiene and environmental control. Essential measures include:

• Thorough pasteurization of the casing soil and compost.
• Maintaining strict sanitary conditions to prevent the entry of mites via workers or equipment.
• Effective monitoring and control of adult fly populations that serve as carriers.
• Localized removal and destruction of infested substrate patches to limit further spread.

Chemical control options are generally restricted in mushroom farming due to food safety regulations. Therefore, successful management relies heavily on preventative cultural practices and strictly maintaining a sterile production environment throughout the cultivation cycle.
