Description
The Elm leaf beetle (Pyrrhalta luteola) is a significant pest of elm trees (Ulmus spp.), belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Chrysomelidae. This invasive insect is widespread across many regions and is known for causing substantial aesthetic and structural damage to landscape trees in urban and rural environments.
The beetle exclusively attacks elm species. While some elms show higher resistance than others, the impact of heavy infestation remains severe for almost all types of elms. Sustained damage over consecutive years can significantly weaken the health of the host tree, making it vulnerable to secondary infections or pathogens.
The life cycle of the elm leaf beetle includes complete metamorphosis. Adult beetles overwinter in sheltered locations, such as tree bark crevices or man-made structures. As temperatures rise in spring, they emerge to feed on developing leaves and mate. Females deposit eggs in clusters on the undersides of the leaves, starting the next generation.
Damage is characterized by extensive skeletonization of foliage. Larvae feed primarily on the leaf tissue between the veins, while adults create small, irregular holes throughout the leaf surface.

Effective management requires a combination of strategies. Foliar sprays are effective during the early larval stage. Additionally, maintaining tree health through proper irrigation and mulching helps the tree tolerate low-to-moderate infestation levels.
