Willow leaf beetle

Systematic position. The willow leaf beetle (Pyrrhalta lineola) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Chrysomelidae. This specialized insect is known for causing significant damage to various willow (Salix) and occasionally poplar (Populus) species, making it a subject of concern in forestry and urban greening.

Host plants and damage. The primary hosts include various willow species. Both adults and larvae cause damage by feeding on leaves. The feeding process results in skeletonization, where only the vascular tissue remains. Heavy infestations can lead to significant defoliation, which hampers the tree's photosynthesis and overall growth rate.

Biology and life cycle. Adults hibernate in leaf litter, under bark, or within the soil surface. They emerge in the spring as soon as foliage starts to develop. Females lay clusters of eggs on the undersides of leaves. After hatching, the larvae go through several instars, feeding voraciously on leaf tissue before pupating in the soil or on the plant itself.

Economic impact. The beetle's impact is most pronounced during years of high population density. Frequent defoliation stunts tree development, reduces wood quality in plantations, and leaves trees vulnerable to secondary attacks by wood-boring insects or fungal pathogens. In nursery settings, it can lead to stunted growth of seedlings, necessitating immediate intervention.

Control measures. Effective management of the willow leaf beetle involves a multifaceted approach:

• Chemical control using registered insecticides applied when larvae are actively feeding.
• Mechanical removal of leaf litter and debris to disrupt the overwintering habitat of the beetles.
• Encouraging natural predators such as birds and beneficial predatory insects that feed on larvae and pupae.
• Regular inspection of willow stands during the early spring to identify and treat infestation outbreaks before they spread.
