The reddish leaf beetle (Pyrrhalta rufosanguinea) is a member of the order Coleoptera and the family Chrysomelidae. This species is recognized as a significant agricultural and horticultural pest, specifically adapted to feed on woody perennial plants. Its classification within the subfamily Galerucinae highlights its characteristic feeding behavior and biological cycle.
The primary host plants for Pyrrhalta rufosanguinea are trees within the Rosaceae family. This includes a variety of commercially and ornamentally important species, such as apples, pears, rowan (Sorbus), and hawthorn. In areas where the beetle is endemic, it can cause severe localized outbreaks, leading to significant damage to orchards and private gardens if left unmanaged.

Sanitation is crucial, as removing and destroying infested plant material and wintering sites reduces the starting population for the next season.
