Red-billed quelea

The red-billed quelea (Quelea quelea) is a small passerine bird in the family Ploceidae. Widely regarded as the most numerous bird species in the world, it is often referred to as the "feathered locust" due to its habit of forming massive, crop-destroying flocks. These birds represent a significant economic threat to agricultural systems across Sub-Saharan Africa.

This pest primarily damages cereal crops, including wheat, sorghum, millet, and rice. The birds target these grains particularly during the soft dough and ripening stages. Because a single flock can contain millions of individuals, the total consumption and destruction of a grain field can occur in a matter of hours, leading to catastrophic losses for local farmers and regional food supplies.

The biological cycle of the red-billed quelea is driven by rainfall and resource availability. They are highly nomadic, following the rains to locate areas of abundant seed production. Their reproductive strategy involves colonial nesting, where thousands of birds build nests in dense thickets. This rapid breeding capability ensures that the population can recover quickly, even after significant mortality events.

In terms of damage, the quelea flock acts as a physical blanket over crops. They not only consume the grain but also damage the stalks by their combined weight, often breaking the plants down. This leads to indirect losses, as the fallen stalks are difficult to harvest with machinery, and the presence of bird waste contaminates the remaining yield, making it unsuitable for commercial storage or sale.
