Red-billed quelea

The red-billed quelea (Quelea quelea) is a small passerine bird from the weaver family, recognized globally as the most numerous wild bird species. Within the agricultural sector, it is classified as a major pest, causing severe economic damage to cereal grain production across sub-Saharan Africa due to its massive population size and destructive foraging behavior.

This species primarily targets cereal crops, including sorghum, millet, wheat, and rice. As the grain reaches the milking or dough stage, quelea flocks descend on fields in millions. Their foraging habits are so intensive that they can consume or destroy the entire harvest of a small-to-medium-sized field in less than an hour, creating a critical threat to local food security.

The biology of the red-billed quelea is defined by rapid breeding cycles and nomadic migration patterns. They breed in dense, colonial nesting sites, often choosing acacia trees or tall shrubs for protection. Their survival strategy relies on massive numbers and the ability to travel vast distances to follow rainfall patterns, which determine the availability of wild seeds and, subsequently, the proximity of cultivated crops.

In terms of damage, the quelea causes both direct losses through grain consumption and indirect losses through stem breakage. When a flock lands on a crop, the sheer collective weight often breaks the stalks, leading to total failure of the affected patches. The sheer scale of damage often forces farmers to abandon affected fields, resulting in significant economic consequences for regional markets.

Managing this pest requires specialized knowledge and large-scale interventions. Traditional and modern control methods include the use of chemical sprays targeted at nesting and roosting sites, usually conducted by aircraft. Furthermore, farmers employ non-lethal deterrents such as sound cannons, visual scarecrows, and in some cases, the use of drones to disrupt flocks before they land. Long-term management focuses on monitoring migratory routes and implementing coordinated regional responses.
