Description
The genus Rattus belongs to the order Rodentia and the family Muridae. The most common species in agricultural settings are the brown rat and the black rat. These highly adaptable synanthropic mammals thrive both in urban structures and directly on agricultural lands, particularly during crop ripening periods.
Rats are omnivorous pests that damage a wide range of crops. In the field, they feed on cereals, corn, sunflower seeds, vegetables, and root crops. However, they cause the most severe economic losses in grain stores, silos, and livestock facilities, where they consume and contaminate vast amounts of food supplies and feed stocks.
The biology of these rodents is characterized by an extremely high reproductive rate. A single female can produce 5–8 litters per year, each consisting of 6 to 15 offspring. Sexual maturity is reached at 2–3 months of age. Such intensive reproduction allows the population to recover quickly even after large-scale extermination efforts.
The damage caused includes not only the direct consumption of seeds and fruits but also significant contamination of the remaining harvest with droppings, urine, and hair, rendering products unsuitable for use. Additionally, rats gnaw through structural components, electrical wiring, and packaging. They act as dangerous vectors for numerous infectious diseases transmissible to humans and livestock.
Protection measures require an integrated approach known as deratization. Key control methods include:
- Application of anticoagulant-based rodenticide baits.
- Deployment of mechanical traps and snap traps in high-activity areas.
- Maintaining strict sanitation in storage areas to eliminate food and water sources.
- Sealing buildings and installing metal mesh barriers to prevent entry.
- Continuous population monitoring using tracking plates or glue boards.
