The Rice-field rat (Rattus argentiventer) is a member of the order Rodentia and the family Muridae. It is recognized as one of the most significant vertebrate pests of agriculture in Southeast Asia, specifically targeting rice paddies and surrounding farming environments.

This species primarily feeds on rice, damaging plants from the seedling stage through to the ripening of grain. Beyond rice, its diet is highly versatile and includes maize, peanuts, soybeans, and the fruits of oil palms. Its ability to shift between different food sources makes it a persistent threat throughout the entire agricultural season.

The biology of the Rice-field rat is defined by its rapid reproductive rate. Under favorable conditions, particularly during the rice maturation period, the population grows exponentially. Females are capable of producing multiple litters annually, with a high survival rate for offspring, which allows the species to quickly recolonize areas following control efforts.

The damage caused is severe and multifaceted. The rats sever the stems of rice plants, causing them to lodge, and consume the grain directly from the panicle. High infestations can lead to total crop failure. Furthermore, these rodents are known vectors for various diseases, posing additional risks to farmers and domestic animals in infested regions.
