Description
Systematic position. The lesser bud moth (Recurvaria leucatella) belongs to the order Lepidoptera, family Gelechiidae. It is a small moth species that primarily affects the growth and development of various fruit trees, causing significant concern for orchard managers.
Host plants. The primary hosts include pome and stone fruit trees, such as apple (Malus), pear (Pyrus), cherry (Prunus), plum, and occasionally sloe. High populations can cause severe stress to young and mature trees alike, leading to reduced vitality.
Biology and life cycle. This species overwinters as young larvae within silken cocoons located in crevices of the bark or at the base of buds. In spring, as temperatures rise, the larvae emerge to feed on developing buds. The pupal stage takes place during late spring, often within rolled or webbed leaves, and adults emerge in summer to lay eggs for the next generation cycle.
Damage and economic impact. The most critical damage occurs during the early spring when larvae bore into the buds, effectively destroying the potential fruit and foliage clusters. As the season progresses, larvae feed on the leaves, creating webbed nests that lead to skeletonization. Sustained damage reduces the photosynthetic capacity of the tree, which negatively impacts fruit quality and overall yield.
Control measures. Integrated pest management (IPM) is recommended for effective control:
- Dormant season pruning to remove infested twigs and branches.
- Monitoring flight patterns using pheromone traps to time insecticide applications accurately.
- Applying systemic insecticides during the green tip stage of bud development.
- Encouraging natural predators such as parasitic wasps that target Gelechiid larvae.
