Description
The Lesser bud moth (Recurvaria nanella) is a member of the Gelechiidae family within the Lepidoptera order. This moth is recognized as a significant pest of various orchard crops, causing substantial economic losses by damaging fruit buds and young foliage.
The species primarily infests a wide range of fruit trees, including apple, pear, plum, cherry, apricot, and peach. Its ability to adapt to diverse climatic conditions allows it to thrive in many fruit-growing regions, making it a constant concern for commercial and residential growers.
The insect typically completes one generation per year. Development begins with overwintering as young larvae tucked away in small silk cocoons within bark crevices. As soon as temperatures rise and buds begin to swell in the spring, the larvae emerge to feed on the developing plant tissues.
The primary damage occurs during the early spring when larvae burrow into swelling buds and destroy them before they can bloom. Later in the season, they move to leaves, tying them together with silk and creating irregular mines. This feeding behavior stunts tree growth and drastically reduces fruit set.
Management of the Lesser bud moth requires an integrated approach. Essential strategies include orchard sanitation, such as removing loose bark and pruning infested branches, which eliminates wintering sites. Chemical control should be timed with the larval emergence phase using targeted insecticides to ensure maximum efficacy while minimizing impact on beneficial insects.
