Soybean stem gall midge

Taxonomic classification: The soybean stem gall midge (Resseliella maxima) belongs to the order Diptera and the family Cecidomyiidae. It is an emerging agricultural pest that specifically targets legume crops, posing a significant challenge to soybean production in various temperate regions where environmental conditions favor its life cycle.

Host plants and damage: The primary host is the soybean plant. The larvae damage the crop by feeding under the epidermis of the stem. This feeding activity disrupts the vascular system, leading to stem tissue necrosis, stunted growth, and lodging of the plants. In cases of high infestation, significant yield losses occur due to compromised nutrient transport and premature plant death.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle involves multiple generations per year depending on climatic factors. Adult midges emerge in late spring and early summer. Females lay eggs into cracks or wounds on the soybean stem. Once the eggs hatch, the larvae congregate and feed within the stem tissue. Once they complete their larval development, they drop to the soil to pupate, continuing the cycle.

Cultural management: Crop rotation is the most effective cultural practice to mitigate the risk of Resseliella maxima infestation. Avoiding monoculture and ensuring a distance between consecutive soybean plantings significantly disrupts the life cycle. Furthermore, thorough post-harvest tillage helps to bury crop residues, thereby increasing the mortality rate of pupating larvae in the soil.

Pest control strategies: Chemical control remains difficult because larvae are protected within the stem tissue. Monitoring adult populations using pheromone or yellow sticky traps is critical for timing insecticide applications. Treatments must be applied during the period of adult peak activity, before the larvae have penetrated the stem tissues and become shielded from contact or short-term systemic pesticides.
