Description
Systematic position. The palm red spider mite (Retracrus elaeis) belongs to the family Tenuipalpidae, commonly known as flat mites, within the order Trombidiformes. It is a highly specialized agricultural pest that affects various species of palms in tropical regions.
Host plants. The primary economic host of Retracrus elaeis is the oil palm (Elaeis guineensis). Infestations are most commonly reported in Latin American countries, where the mite poses a consistent threat to large-scale palm oil production.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of the egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph, and adult stages. The mites typically aggregate on the foliage, where females lay eggs in sheltered areas, often near leaf veins. The development rate is highly sensitive to ambient temperature and humidity levels found in plantation environments.
Damage and economic significance. These mites damage the plant by piercing epidermal cells and sucking the cell contents. This feeding activity results in chlorotic stippling, which eventually leads to tissue necrosis and the bronzing of leaves. Severe infestations significantly reduce the photosynthetic capacity of the palms, causing lower fruit set and decreased oil yield.
