Retracrus johnstoni is a herbivorous mite belonging to the family Tenuipalpidae, commonly known as flat mites or false spider mites. Systematically, this pest is classified within the order Trombidiformes. Its presence often remains undetected until significant damage to plant tissues becomes apparent.
The primary host for this species is the coconut palm. The pest colonizes mainly the underside of leaves and young fruits, feeding on cell sap. Beyond coconut palms, other decorative palm species in tropical and subtropical regions may also be susceptible to infestations by this mite.
The biology of the mite is characterized by rapid development under conditions of high temperature and moderate humidity. The life cycle consists of the egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph, and adult stages. Females lay their eggs directly on the surface of the leaf epidermis, allowing the population to increase rapidly within a short period under favorable microclimatic conditions.
A typical sign of infestation is the appearance of yellowish or brownish necrotic spots on the leaves, which eventually merge. Intense feeding by the mites leads to leaf deformation, premature yellowing, and an overall reduction in the palm's productivity. In cases of severe infestation, fruit quality may deteriorate, leading to weight loss and unmarketability.
