Systematic position: Rhipiphorothrips is a genus of insects belonging to the order Thysanoptera and the family Thripidae. These pests are recognized for their ability to colonize various horticultural crops, specifically known for the species Rhipiphorothrips cruentatus, which is a major concern for viticulturists and fruit growers in temperate to tropical regions.

Target crops: This pest exhibits a polyphagous nature, attacking a wide range of woody plants. Notable hosts include grapevines, pomegranate trees, mango, and many ornamental shrubs. By feeding on the underside of the foliage, the thrips can rapidly infest entire orchards if environmental conditions are conducive to their proliferation.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle consists of egg, larval, prepupal, pupal, and adult stages. Development is highly sensitive to temperature; warmer weather drastically accelerates the reproductive rate, allowing for multiple generations per season. The insects are often found in clusters, moving rapidly between leaves when disturbed, which complicates manual removal.

Damage and severity: Feeding activity causes visible chlorotic spotting and discolouration of the leaf surface. As the damage progresses, leaves become scorched, curl, and may drop prematurely. The presence of dark, faecal droplets on the foliage is a distinct diagnostic feature, indicating heavy infestation and reduced photosynthetic capacity of the plant.

Control measures: A holistic pest management (IPM) strategy is essential for effective control.

• Application of systemic insecticides during early larval stages.
• Pruning and destroying heavily infested plant debris to reduce overwintering populations.
• Deployment of blue or yellow sticky traps for population monitoring.
