Apple fruit rhynchites

The apple fruit rhynchites (Rhynchites cribripennis) is a destructive pest of fruit trees belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Attelabidae. This small weevil, known for its metallic sheen, can cause severe economic losses in both commercial orchards and home gardens, particularly in regions with temperate climates where it thrives in spring.

It primarily infests fruit-bearing trees, including apples, pears, plums, cherries, apricots, and quinces. Adult beetles become active early in the spring, feeding on dormant buds and young leaves. This feeding behavior not only damages the foliage but also impacts the tree's ability to develop healthy blossoms and fruits during the critical early season.

The biological life cycle of Rhynchites cribripennis is synchronized with the tree's phenology. After mating, the female bores into young fruit or shoots to deposit her eggs. The larvae develop inside these tissues, causing the fruit or shoots to wilt and eventually drop to the ground, where the larvae then pupate in the soil before emerging as adults.

The damage caused by these pests is multifaceted. Feeding adults create pin-prick holes in leaves and fruit stalks, while larval activity leads to premature fruit drop and tissue necrosis. High infestation levels can reduce crop yields significantly, often resulting in distorted fruit that is unsuitable for market consumption or storage.

Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy. Recommended control measures include:

• Cultivating the soil beneath the canopy to disturb and destroy pupae.
• Promptly removing and disposing of fallen, infested fruit to break the life cycle.
• Applying targeted insecticides during the bud burst stage when adults are most active.
• Manually collecting beetles in the early morning hours by shaking branches over a catch sheet.
