Systematic position: The shining weevil (Rhynchites fulgidus) is a member of the Coleoptera order, belonging to the Rhynchitidae family. It is recognized as a significant pest of orchard ecosystems, known for its specific impact on the development of fruit tree tissues.
Host plants: This pest primarily affects pome and stone fruit crops. Apple, pear, apricot, and plum trees are the most common hosts. The insect causes damage during the early stages of plant growth, targeting developing buds, blossoms, and immature fruits.
Biology and life cycle: The species overwinters as an adult in the soil or under organic debris. With the arrival of spring, adults emerge to feed on succulent buds and shoots. Female weevils lay eggs inside young fruits after partially cutting the stalk, which triggers the fruit to drop to the ground, providing a suitable environment for larval development.
