Systematic position: Rhynocoris cuspidatus is a species within the order Hemiptera and the family Reduviidae, commonly known as assassin bugs. While generally recognized as beneficial predators of other insects, they can occasionally demonstrate opportunistic feeding habits on plant tissues when their primary prey is scarce.

Target crops: These insects are frequently found in orchard environments, berry patches, and vegetable gardens. Crops such as raspberries, strawberries, apples, and ornamental shrubs may suffer when nymphs or adults pierce succulent stems, petioles, or flower buds to extract plant sap in search of moisture or nutrients.

Biology and lifecycle: The life cycle progresses through egg, five nymphal instars, and the adult stage. Overwintering occurs in the adult stage within protected niches such as leaf litter, bark crevices, or debris. Upon the arrival of spring, they emerge, mate, and deposit eggs on plant foliage, where the subsequent nymphs develop over several weeks.

Damage and severity: The primary injury is caused by the insertion of the rostrum into plant tissue. The injection of saliva containing digestive enzymes creates localized necrotic spots. Heavy infestations may result in leaf distortion, blossom drop, stunted development of the shoots, and reduced overall plant vigor, impacting yield potential.
