Rhysodes is a genus of beetles belonging to the family Rhysodidae, which is part of the suborder Adephaga. These insects are unique, highly specialized xylophages that have adapted to live exclusively within decaying wood. Due to their specific environment, they possess a distinct morphology characterized by a flattened, elongated body that allows them to move efficiently through narrow galleries.

These beetles typically inhabit weak, dying, or dead deciduous trees, including oak and beech. It is crucial to note that they are not considered aggressive pests that attack healthy, vigorous trees. Instead, they act as secondary organisms that colonize wood already compromised by environmental stress or other primary fungal pathogens.

The biology and life cycle of Rhysodes are intrinsically linked to the degradation process of wood. Both larvae and adults reside deep within the heartwood or under the bark of logs and stumps. They feed primarily on the fungal mycelium growing within the wood and the woody tissue itself, provided it has reached a sufficient stage of decay to be accessible.

The damage caused by these beetles consists of thin, intricate tunnels packed with finely pulverized wood dust. While they do not pose a threat to agricultural crops, their presence in timber can degrade the quality of logs, making the wood more susceptible to further structural failure and accelerated decomposition in the forest environment.

Management strategies for Rhysodes are primarily focused on silvicultural practices rather than chemical treatments:

• Regular sanitation logging to remove dead or heavily infested wood.
• Proper storage of harvested timber in dry conditions to prevent moisture accumulation and decay.
• Monitoring the health of forest stands to detect early signs of decline that might attract wood-boring insects.
