Wrinkled bark beetle

The wrinkled bark beetle (Rhysodes sulcatus) is a unique member of the family Rhysodidae within the order Coleoptera. Unlike typical bark beetles that attack healthy trees, this species is highly specialized to dwell within the internal layers of decaying wood, making it a distinct entity in forest biology.

This beetle primarily infests deciduous tree species, including oak, beech, and alder. It targets trees that are already suffering from decay or fungal infections, acting as a secondary colonizer that accelerates the breakdown of woody debris rather than attacking healthy, vigorous timber stands.

Regarding its biology and lifecycle, the beetle spends its entire developmental period inside the moist, rotting heartwood. Both larvae and adults navigate the wood by excavating narrow, longitudinal galleries. The development from egg to imago is a slow process, synchronized with the gradual degradation of the woody substrate.

The damage caused by Rhysodes sulcatus is characterized by the internal galleries that fragment the structure of the decaying wood. While it is not considered a primary agricultural or silvicultural pest, its presence is a clear bio-indicator that the affected wood has lost its integrity and is undergoing intensive biological decomposition.

Management practices for this beetle are focused on forest hygiene and sanitation rather than chemical eradication. Key strategies include:

• Clearing the forest floor of downed logs and coarse woody debris.
