Rhyssa amoena is a species of parasitic wasp belonging to the family Ichneumonidae. These insects are critical components of forest biodiversity, acting as natural biological controllers that suppress populations of wood-boring insects, such as horntails and longhorn beetles, which are detrimental to tree health.

The biology of this species is fascinating due to its highly specialized sensory capabilities. Females utilize long ovipositors to detect the vibrations and chemical cues produced by larvae hiding deep within the tree trunk. Once a host is located, the wasp drills through the bark to deposit its eggs.

The larval stage of Rhyssa amoena develops as an ectoparasitoid. It feeds on the host larva, eventually causing its death and thereby preventing the host from completing its life cycle and causing further damage to the tree's vascular system. This process is essential for maintaining the ecological balance.
