Description

The Lesser grain borer (Rhyzopertha dominica) is a member of the Coleoptera order and the Bostrichidae family. It is recognized globally as one of the most destructive primary pests of stored grain, capable of causing devastating losses in granaries and silos.

The pest targets a wide variety of cereal crops, including wheat, barley, maize, rice, and sorghum. It is also known to infest processed grain products and seeds. Because of its ability to drill into intact kernels, it can damage grain that other pests might find impenetrable.

The biology of the species is highly adapted to stored product environments. Females lay hundreds of eggs, and the larvae develop inside the kernels, feeding on the endosperm. The life cycle length varies significantly based on temperature and humidity, with the pest thriving in warm, tropical, or subtropical conditions.

Damage caused by this insect is severe. Both adult beetles and larvae consume the grain, leaving behind large hollows and exit holes. This feeding activity not only destroys the germ, rendering the grain non-viable for seed, but also produces a fine dust, known as "grain flour," which significantly reduces market value.

  • Drying the grain to low moisture levels to inhibit larval development.
