Northern reniform nematode

Northern reniform nematode (Rotylenchulus borealis) is a member of the family Hoplolaimidae and the order Tylenchida. This plant-parasitic nematode is a sedentary semi-endoparasite, which means that adult females partially embed themselves into the root tissues of host plants to feed, while the males remain vermiform and mobile in the soil environment.

The host range for this species includes various vegetable crops, cereals, and ornamental plants. By establishing permanent feeding sites within the roots, these nematodes disrupt the vascular system of the plant. This interference prevents the efficient uptake of water and essential nutrients, which is particularly detrimental during the critical stages of crop establishment and development.

The life cycle of Rotylenchulus borealis consists of an egg stage, four juvenile stages, and the adult stage. The survival and reproduction of the nematode are closely tied to soil temperature and moisture conditions. Immature females infect the root, induce the formation of specialized "nurse cells" to provide a continuous food supply, and then reach reproductive maturity, laying eggs in a protective gelatinous matrix.

Symptoms of infestation are often non-specific, frequently mistaken for nutritional deficiencies or drought stress. These include stunted growth, chlorosis, and wilting, especially during midday temperatures. Underground, the root systems may appear necrotic or poorly developed, showing a lack of fine root hairs, which makes the plant more vulnerable to secondary infections by soil-borne fungi and bacteria.

Effective management requires an integrated approach to minimize population densities. Key strategies include crop rotation with non-host plant species, proper soil management to promote suppressive microbial communities, and the use of certified pathogen-free planting material. In greenhouse environments, steam sterilization or chemical soil fumigation remains the most effective method for eradicating established nematode populations.
