Reniform nematode

Rotylenchulus clavicaudatus

Description

Rotylenchulus clavicaudatus is a species of plant-parasitic nematode belonging to the order Tylenchida and the family Hoplolaimidae. These microscopic organisms are known as semi-endoparasites, meaning they penetrate the root tissue partially, with the posterior part of the female’s body remaining outside the root in the soil.

The host range of this nematode includes various economically important crops, particularly in warm temperate and tropical regions. It primarily attacks the root system, causing severe physiological stress to the plant by impairing the uptake of essential nutrients and moisture, which leads to stunted growth and reduced vigor.

The life cycle of Rotylenchulus clavicaudatus involves several larval stages before reaching adulthood. Only the immature females are mobile and capable of penetrating the root cortex. Once inside, they induce feeding sites in the pericycle or endodermis, swell, and remain stationary to feed, completing their development into egg-laying females.

Damage symptoms are often misdiagnosed as nutrient deficiencies or drought stress. Infested plants typically exhibit stunted growth, yellowing (chlorosis), and wilting, especially under thermal stress. Roots may show brown lesions, stunted development, or a reduced number of lateral roots, which ultimately affects the overall crop yield significantly.

  • Crop rotation with non-host plants to disrupt the life cycle.
  • Use of certified nematode-free planting material.
  • Application of biological control agents and nematophagous fungi.
  • Implementation of soil solarization in infested areas.
  • Effective weed control to eliminate alternative hosts.

Management of this nematode requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach. Given its ability to persist in the soil and its wide host range, physical and biological methods are preferred over long-term chemical dependence. Maintaining soil health and biodiversity remains the most sustainable way to suppress its population density.
