This microscopic pest is widely recognized in nematology for its ability to infect a broad range of agricultural crops, causing stunted growth and reducing overall yields in infested fields.

The life cycle of this nematode is distinct, categorized as semi-endoparasitic. While juvenile stages and males remain motile in the soil, the immature, fertilized females penetrate the root tissues. Once inside, they establish sedentary feeding sites within the plant roots, where they remain for the rest of their lives, extracting nutrients and laying eggs in a gelatinous matrix.

The host range of Rotylenchulus macrodoratus is extensive, including various woody perennials, grapevines, and numerous fruit trees. The nematode thrives in various soil types and is primarily disseminated through the movement of infested soil, irrigation water, and the trading of contaminated nursery stock, making it a critical concern for biosecurity.
