Reniform nematode

The reniform nematode (Rotylenchulus reniformis) is a destructive plant-parasitic nematode belonging to the order Tylenchida and family Hoplolaimidae. Known primarily for its kidney-shaped adult females, this pest causes severe economic losses in tropical and subtropical agriculture by parasitizing the root systems of various crops.

Its host range is remarkably wide, encompassing over 300 plant species. Important economic crops heavily impacted by this nematode include cotton, soybean, pineapple, sweet potato, and a variety of vegetable crops such as tomatoes and peppers. The nematode thrives in warm, moist soils, making it a critical threat in many agricultural regions worldwide.

The biology of Rotylenchulus reniformis is characterized by a sedentary lifestyle for adult females. While juvenile stages and immature females remain mobile in the soil, the mature female partially embeds herself into the host root, becoming sedentary for the remainder of her life. She then forms a feeding site and begins depositing eggs into a gelatinous matrix, completing her life cycle in approximately three to four weeks.

The damage caused by these nematodes is systemic. By feeding on the roots, they disrupt the plant's ability to transport water and essential nutrients effectively. Typical symptoms of infestation include stunted growth, chlorosis, severe wilting, and significantly reduced yield. Furthermore, the root lesions often serve as entry points for soil-borne fungal pathogens, leading to complex disease interactions.

Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling this nematode, as total eradication is rarely achievable. Recommended strategies include:

• Implementing crop rotation with non-host species to reduce soil populations.
• Using nematode-resistant or tolerant crop varieties where available.
• Applying chemical or biological nematicides during pre-planting.
• Maintaining strict sanitation practices to prevent the spread of infested soil.
• Promoting healthy soil conditions through organic matter amendments to support natural predators.
