Rotylenchulus sacchari is a species of plant-parasitic nematode belonging to the order Tylenchida and the family Hoplolaimidae. Known for its impact on agriculture, this nematode acts as a soil-borne pest that targets the roots of various host plants, disrupting nutrient uptake and causing significant physiological stress to the affected crops.

The primary hosts of Rotylenchulus sacchari include sugarcane and various other agricultural crops. Because it is highly adaptable, this nematode can thrive in diverse environments, making it a persistent challenge in tropical and subtropical regions where environmental conditions favor the rapid reproduction and dissemination of these microscopic organisms.

The biology of this nematode is distinct due to the semi-endoparasitic nature of the adult females. Once a female finds a suitable root, she inserts her anterior part into the cortex, establishing a permanent feeding site. The posterior part of the body remains outside the root tissue, where she deposits eggs in a specialized gelatinous matrix, facilitating the continuation of the infestation cycle.

The damage caused by these nematodes is often manifested as stunted plant growth, chlorosis, and a reduced root system that is highly susceptible to secondary infections. Because the symptoms are frequently subterranean, the damage often remains unnoticed until significant yield loss has already occurred, leading to decreased biomass and poor crop performance across infected areas.

Effective management and control of Rotylenchulus sacchari require a multi-faceted approach to limit population densities:
