Rotylenchus is a genus of plant-parasitic nematodes belonging to the order Tylenchida and the family Hoplolaimidae. These microscopic roundworms are prevalent soil-borne pests that affect the root systems of a wide range of agricultural, horticultural, and ornamental crops, often causing significant economic losses in infested areas.

The biology of Rotylenchus involves a complex lifecycle that typically occurs within the soil environment and root tissue. These nematodes are equipped with a specialized feeding apparatus known as a stylet, which they use to penetrate plant cells and extract nutrients. The lifecycle consists of an egg stage followed by four larval stages, with molting occurring between each stage, allowing the nematode to mature and reproduce efficiently.

Rotylenchus species are known to attack various crops, including cereals, vegetables, fruit trees, and turf grasses. They act as ectoparasites and semi-endoparasites, meaning they may feed from the outside of the root or partially embed themselves into the root cortex. This feeding activity disrupts the plant's ability to uptake water and essential minerals, leading to systemic stress.

The damage inflicted by the stylet creates open wounds on the roots, which often serve as entry points for secondary pathogens, such as fungi and bacteria.
