The boxwood spiral nematode, scientifically known as Rotylenchus buxophilus, is classified within the order Tylenchida and the family Hoplolaimidae. It is an ectoparasitic nematode that feeds on the roots of plants, primarily targeting the Buxus genus. Due to its microscopic size, it often goes unnoticed until significant damage to the plant's health occurs.

Host plants and distribution
The primary host for this nematode is the boxwood plant (Buxus spp.). It is a major problem in nurseries where infested soil and root balls facilitate the rapid spread of the pathogen. While primarily associated with boxwood, the nematode can survive in the soil around other plants, making eradication from a landscape setting a challenging task for growers.

Biology and lifecycle
The lifecycle of Rotylenchus buxophilus consists of an egg stage, several juvenile stages, and the adult stage. Reproduction is amphimictic, involving both sexes. The nematodes move through the soil water film toward the root tips, where they pierce the epidermal cells to extract nutrients. Their activity is heavily dependent on soil moisture levels and the availability of active, growing roots.

Nature of damage and impact
Feeding by the spiral nematode results in restricted root growth and the development of necrotic lesions on the root surface. Above ground, affected boxwoods display signs of nutrient deficiency, such as chlorosis, stunting, and overall poor vigor. Over time, the root system becomes unable to support the plant, leading to gradual decline, thin foliage, and eventual dieback of the branches.

Protection and management measures
Managing an infestation requires integrated pest management strategies:

  • Strict quarantine and inspection of new nursery stock to prevent introduction.
  • Testing soil in suspected areas before planting new boxwoods.
  • Maintaining soil health through proper irrigation and the addition of organic matter to foster beneficial soil organisms.
