Russellaspis is a genus of insects belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Coccidae, commonly known as soft scale insects. These tiny, sap-sucking pests possess a specialized morphology and a complex life cycle that enables them to thrive as parasites on a wide array of woody plants, shrubs, and ornamental trees in various climates.

Primary hosts for this genus include various ornamental and fruit-bearing species. The insects prefer to establish themselves on twigs and branches, where they anchor to the bark to feed on plant phloem sap. In greenhouse conditions or mild climates, the pest can spread rapidly, infesting both deciduous and certain coniferous tree species if left unchecked.

The biology of Russellaspis is tightly linked to seasonal rhythms. Adult females are typically sessile, protected by a hard, waxy, or chitinous scale covering under which eggs develop. The first-instar nymphs, known as crawlers, are highly mobile and serve as the primary dispersal stage, moving across the plant or being carried by wind to nearby hosts, facilitating the rapid expansion of infestations.

The damage caused by these insects is manifested by stunted growth, leaf chlorosis, and premature leaf drop. As they feed, they excrete honeydew, a sugary substance that promotes the growth of sooty mold. This residue not only spoils the plant's appearance but also inhibits photosynthesis, leading to branch deformation, twig dieback, and potentially the death of weakened host plants.

Regular sanitation, including the pruning and removal of heavily infested branches, is critical. During the crawler stage, the application of systemic or contact insecticides is recommended, as is the use of horticultural oils that smother the insects and interfere with their respiration through the scale covering.
