Saiga antelope

The saiga antelope (Saiga tatarica) is a cloven-hoofed mammal belonging to the Bovidae family. While these animals are ecologically significant and protected by law, they can behave as significant pests in steppe agricultural systems when large herds migrate through farmlands, causing extensive damage to crops and infrastructure.

These animals primarily target cereal crops, including wheat, barley, and millet. During the germination stage and early growth phases, the saiga's feeding habits can lead to the total loss of a crop stand. The animals graze aggressively, removing the green biomass necessary for photosynthesis and further development of the plants.

The biology of the saiga revolves around high mobility and seasonal migration patterns. Faced with environmental pressures such as drought or heavy snowfall, they migrate in search of food. Their reproductive cycle and gathering in large groups near agricultural land can lead to sudden and heavy grazing pressure on fields, often overwhelming the capacity of the soil and crops to recover.

The damage is characterized not only by the consumption of crops but also by severe soil compaction caused by the hooves of the herd. This mechanical action disrupts the soil structure, reduces aeration, and makes the field unsuitable for healthy plant regrowth. The economic impact can be devastating for farmers who experience complete crop destruction in a very short period.

Protection measures must be non-lethal and focus on deterring the animals from entering sensitive areas. Recommended strategies include:

• Using visual repellents like reflective tape or scarecrows to create a zone of avoidance.
