Locust

Locusts (lat. Acrididae) are a group of short-horned grasshoppers from the order Orthoptera that are notorious for their potential to undergo a transformation from a solitary phase to a gregarious phase. In this state, they form massive, migratory swarms that pose a severe threat to global agriculture and food security.

These insects are polyphagous pests, feeding on a wide variety of crops. Key targets include wheat, barley, maize, sorghum, rice, and pasture grasses. When swarms descend upon a field, they can consume both the foliage and the stems of plants, often causing total crop failure within a very short period of time.

The life cycle of the locust consists of the egg, nymph (hopper), and adult stages. Females lay eggs in the soil within protective egg pods, known as egg beds, which are often located in undisturbed areas or along river valleys. Nymphs go through five developmental stages, growing rapidly and becoming increasingly mobile and voracious before reaching adulthood.

The damage caused by locusts is characterized by severe defoliation and tissue destruction. As they move in swarms, they strip crops, vegetables, and fruit trees, leading to catastrophic yield losses. The rapid movement of swarms makes them difficult to control, as they can migrate across large geographical areas, destroying entire farming landscapes as they go.

Control strategies for locusts require early intervention and large-scale coordination. Mechanical control methods like deep plowing or harrowing can destroy egg pods in the soil. Chemical control remains the primary response during outbreaks, utilizing targeted application of contact-based insecticides against early-stage hoppers to prevent the formation of flying swarms.
