Description

Systematic position: The Tasmanian devil (Sarcophilus harrisii) belongs to the order Dasyuromorphia and the family Dasyuridae. While primarily a carnivorous marsupial, its intrusion into agricultural landscapes presents a non-traditional challenge for agronomists, specifically regarding physical habitat disturbance.

Crops affected: The species does not feed on plant matter; however, it causes indirect damage to root crops, vineyards, and young nursery stock. By digging through beds and trampling vegetation, the animal destroys the soil structure, which negatively affects crop uniformity and plant vitality.

Biology and life cycle: These nocturnal animals are solitary by nature. Their life cycle includes a mating season that dictates their movement patterns across the landscape. As they seek sheltered burrows, they often select cultivated fields, which provide soft, tilled soil that is easy for them to manipulate and dig in.

Damage patterns and harm: The harm is predominantly mechanical. Damage to drip irrigation lines, protective mesh, and seedling root systems often leads to increased susceptibility to environmental stress. In cases of high activity, the disturbed soil surface leads to rapid dehydration of the root zone, causing significant yield losses in sensitive crop areas.

Protection measures: Since the Tasmanian devil is a protected species, control methods must be non-lethal and focus on exclusion:

  • Installation of exclusion fencing with subterranean barriers to prevent digging under.
  • Implementation of motion-activated sonic or light-based deterrents.
  • Maintaining a clean perimeter to avoid attracting the devil's prey, such as rodents or carrion.
  • Utilization of physical barriers around irrigation equipment and key infrastructure to prevent damage.
