Sarisodera is a genus of cyst-forming nematodes belonging to the family Heteroderidae. As specialized plant parasites, these microscopic organisms live in the soil and depend entirely on the root systems of host plants for survival and reproduction. Their ability to persist in the soil for several years in a dormant cyst stage makes them a persistent threat to agricultural production.

Taxonomically, the genus Sarisodera falls under the order Tylenchida. The biological structure of these nematodes is defined by sexual dimorphism, where females develop a globose or saccate body shape during the feeding stage. Once mature, the female's cuticle hardens to form a cyst, which acts as a protective vessel for hundreds of eggs, ensuring the species' survival through adverse climate or crop-free periods.

The damage caused by Sarisodera is primarily focused on the roots, where they act as endoparasites. By disrupting the vascular tissue and diverting nutrients to feed their development, they induce the formation of giant cells within the root cortex. This leads to stunted plant growth, chlorosis of leaves, and wilting, as the root system loses its ability to effectively transport water and essential nutrients to the foliage.

The lifecycle begins with the hatching of second-stage juveniles triggered by root exudates from susceptible plants. Once inside the root, the juveniles establish permanent feeding sites and undergo a series of molts. Males, which are vermiform and motile, exit the roots to find sessile females. After fertilization, the female body wall thickens, protecting the eggs until the next favorable growing season arrives.

Effective management of Sarisodera requires an integrated approach.
