Scaptocoris

Scaptocoris is a genus of subterranean bugs belonging to the family Cydnidae, commonly known as burrowing bugs. Unlike many surface-dwelling pests, these insects are specialized to live and feed entirely underground, making them significant challenges for crop production in various parts of the world.

Taxonomically, they are classified within the order Hemiptera. The most prominent species, Scaptocoris castanea, is characterized by its robust, shovel-like forelegs which are evolutionarily adapted for moving through soil. This morphology allows them to navigate dense underground environments with ease to reach plant roots.

The host range for Scaptocoris is broad, impacting critical agricultural crops such as corn, soybeans, cotton, and various types of pasture grasses. They thrive in regions where soil conditions provide both adequate moisture and structural stability, allowing for the formation of large, destructive subterranean colonies.

The life cycle consists of eggs, five nymphal instars, and adults. Both nymphs and adults feed by piercing roots and extracting sap. During this process, they inject toxic saliva that leads to tissue necrosis and severe metabolic disruption of the plant, often causing rapid wilting and eventual death of the crop.

The economic impact of Scaptocoris is significant due to the hidden nature of the damage, which often goes unnoticed until widespread crop patches begin to die. Effective management requires an integrated approach to maintain crop health:
