Description
The burrowing bug (Scaptocoris talpa) is a subterranean insect belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Cydnidae. It is a highly specialized pest that spends its entire life cycle underground, making it a challenging target for standard crop monitoring and conventional pest control programs.
This species causes economic damage to a variety of agricultural crops, including corn, soybeans, cotton, and rice. By feeding directly on the root systems, the burrowing bug interferes with the plant's ability to take up water and nutrients, which is particularly devastating during the early seedling stage.
The life cycle involves multiple nymphal stages that, like the adults, live in the soil. These insects possess specialized forelegs designed for burrowing, allowing them to move vertically through the soil profile to access succulent roots, particularly during periods of environmental stress.
