Burrowing bug

Scaptocoris terginus

Description

Scaptocoris terginus is a significant soil-dwelling pest belonging to the Cydnidae family, commonly known as burrowing bugs. These insects possess specialized forelegs adapted for digging, allowing them to remain subterranean throughout most of their life cycle, which effectively protects them from surface-applied contact pesticides.

This pest infests a broad range of agricultural crops, showing a strong preference for roots. Major target crops include corn, soybeans, cotton, rice, and various forage grasses. In regions with high population densities, the damage can be catastrophic, leading to extensive yield losses across large tracts of land.

The biology of Scaptocoris terginus is dictated by soil conditions. Adults and nymphs feed on root tissues, often aggregating around the root zone. Their lifecycle includes the egg stage, five nymphal instars, and the adult stage. The speed of development and survival rates are heavily influenced by soil moisture levels and temperature profiles throughout the growing season.

The damage caused is primarily physiological. By piercing roots to feed on sap, the insects disrupt nutrient and water uptake. Symptoms include leaf chlorosis, stunted plant growth, wilting, and patchiness in fields where crops fail to establish properly. Because the damage is below ground, it is often misidentified as nutrient deficiency or drought stress.

Effective management strategies for controlling this pest include:

  • Seed treatment with systemic insecticides.
  • Application of soil insecticides during sowing.
  • Implementation of crop rotation to break the pest population cycle.
  • Regular soil sampling to detect infestation thresholds.
  • Tillage practices that disturb the soil environment to reduce survival rates.
