Grape leaf beetle

Scelodonta strigicollis

Description

The grape leaf beetle (Scelodonta strigicollis) is a destructive pest belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Chrysomelidae. It is recognized as a major threat to viticulture in several Asian regions, where its feeding habits directly compromise the reproductive potential of grape vines.

This beetle specifically targets grapevines (Vitis vinifera). The adult insects are the most damaging stage, as they emerge in early spring to feed greedily on developing buds, shoots, and young foliage. In severe infestation scenarios, the beetles can cause total loss of new growth, leaving the vines unable to produce fruit for the entire season.

The biological cycle involves overwintering as adults deep within the soil. When temperatures rise in the spring, the beetles emerge and move onto the vine canopy. After feeding and mating, they lay eggs, and the resulting larvae descend into the soil. These larvae feed on the fine root hairs of the grapevine, which further exacerbates the stress on the host plant.

The economic impact of Scelodonta strigicollis is severe due to the destruction of buds at the critical early growth stage. The foliage often shows characteristic circular holes or irregular margins. Beyond yield loss, heavy infestations can lead to stunted growth, reduced winter hardiness, and in young plants, even complete mortality if left untreated.

  • Implementing regular soil cultivation to disturb overwintering stages and larvae.
  • Applying systemic or contact insecticides when beetles are actively feeding on buds.
  • Installing physical barriers or sticky bands on the trunk to prevent migration.
  • Manual removal of beetles during the early morning when they are less active.
  • Maintaining healthy plant nutrition to improve the vine's recovery potential after damage.
