South American locust

Schistocerca cancellata is a devastating species of grasshopper belonging to the family Acrididae. Widely known as the South American locust, it is a significant agricultural pest capable of forming massive, migratory swarms that travel vast distances, causing widespread destruction to agricultural landscapes.

The insect exhibits extreme polyphagy, meaning it feeds on a vast array of plant species. The primary crops at risk include cereal crops like wheat, maize, and sorghum, as well as legumes such as soybeans and essential pasture grasses. Because of their voracious appetite, these locusts can decimate fields in a matter of hours, posing a severe threat to regional food security.

The lifecycle consists of egg, nymphal, and adult stages. Under favorable environmental conditions, the population can expand rapidly. A unique biological trait of this species is its phase polyphenism, where individuals transform from a solitary phase to a gregarious phase when population density becomes high, leading to the formation of swarms that exhibit synchronized behavior.

The damage caused by these pests is both extensive and rapid. Both nymphs and adults consume leaves, stems, and fruits, often leaving nothing but stalks behind. Beyond direct crop loss, these infestations cause significant damage to grazing lands, creating secondary economic impacts for the livestock industry and forcing farmers to incur high costs for crop protection.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this pest. Strategies include intensive surveillance and monitoring of potential breeding grounds to detect early-stage nymphs. Control measures primarily involve the targeted application of chemical insecticides while the locusts are in the flightless nymphal stage. Additionally, soil tillage in known breeding zones can help destroy egg pods before they hatch.
