Schizotetranychus is a genus of spider mites within the family Tetranychidae, order Trombidiformes. These microscopic arthropods are notorious pests in both agricultural and horticultural settings, infesting a wide range of hosts including woody ornamentals, fruit trees, and various herbaceous plants.

The biology of these mites is characterized by rapid development and high reproductive rates, especially in hot and dry climates. They typically progress through several generations during a single growing season. Females often construct delicate, localized webs on the underside of leaves or within specific leaf micro-habitats, providing protection for eggs and developing larvae against natural enemies and environmental stress.

Damage caused by Schizotetranychus mites results from the extraction of plant cell sap. As they feed, the epidermal cells collapse, leading to the formation of chlorotic stippling on the leaf surface. As the infestation progresses, these spots coalesce, turning leaves yellow or bronze, often causing premature leaf senescence and abscission in heavily affected host plants.

The economic impact of these pests is significant, as severe infestations lead to reduced photosynthetic efficiency, stunted plant growth, and diminished yield or aesthetic value.
