Recognized as a significant agricultural pest, it primarily infests grasses, including major cereal and forage crops. Its presence is often correlated with specific microclimatic conditions, typically thriving in hot and dry environments.

Taxonomically, the mite is classified within the Trombidiformes order. Its life cycle involves egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph, and adult stages. Under favorable conditions, particularly high temperatures, the generation turnover is rapid, allowing the population to reach damaging levels within a few weeks. Females typically overwinter in plant debris or soil crevices.

The primary host range of Schizotetranychus andropogoni includes crops such as sorghum, maize, sugarcane, and various wild grass species. The mites establish colonies on the abaxial (underside) surface of the leaves, constructing delicate but effective webbing. This silken structure acts as a protective shield against predators and environmental stress.
