Sciara inconstans
Sciara inconstans
Description
Sciara inconstans is a species of fungus gnat belonging to the family Sciaridae (order Diptera). These small, dark-colored flies are notorious pests in greenhouse environments, indoor plant collections, and nurseries where high humidity and organic-rich soil provide ideal conditions for their reproduction.
The pest targets a wide range of horticultural and ornamental plants. It is particularly destructive during the early developmental stages of crops, as the larvae favor tender seedlings, rooted cuttings, and plants with compromised root health that are grown in damp conditions.
The life cycle encompasses the egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Adult gnats are attracted to moist environments to lay their eggs in the soil. The larvae, which are identified by their shiny black head capsules, live in the substrate and develop through four instars before pupating in the soil or potting mix.
The primary damage is caused by the larvae feeding on root hairs, primary roots, and stems at the soil line. This feeding activity leads to stunted plant growth, wilting, and often plant mortality. Furthermore, their presence creates entry points for soil-borne pathogens, leading to secondary fungal infections like root rot.
Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for control. Strategies include allowing the soil surface to dry out between waterings, using sterile growing media, and deploying yellow sticky traps to monitor adult populations. In cases of severe infestation, biological controls such as entomopathogenic nematodes or specific soil drenches can be applied.
- Use of sterile soil potting mixes.
- Avoidance of over-irrigation.
- Installation of yellow sticky boards.
- Application of biological control agents like Steinernema feltiae.
